Microsoft cleans up Copilot and builds its super app

Microsoft is merging its separate Copilot apps for consumers and business customers into a single application called Microsoft Copilot — and is using the rebuild to cut under-used AI features. Work and personal accounts remain separate inside the unified app.

From August 18, Copilot Podcasts, Group Chat and Deep Research disappear; Mico, the animated voice-mode character, is also being retired and may at most resurface in education features. As Deep Research's replacement Microsoft positions “Researcher” — which is restricted to Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers. Free core chat access continues, but with capacity limits some users will hit sooner than today.

The timeline is tight: migration starts for Windows Insiders in the week of August 13, the global mobile and web rollout follows in mid-August, Windows and Mac apps are updated by mid-September, and web redirects to copilot.cloud.microsoft take effect at the end of August.

The consolidation lays the groundwork for Microsoft's “super app”, which is set to bundle chat, AI coding, Cowork and AutoPilot agents into one platform. CEO Satya Nadella has promised it “this quarter” — meaning by the end of September. For companies, the takeaway: teams that built workflows on retired Copilot features should migrate now; those waiting for the super app will see a substantially different product within weeks.
