Anthropic Q3 Revenue Hits $16.8B Ahead of IPO
At an investor day before its planned November listing, Anthropic put Q3 revenue at $16.8 billion, with sequential growth down to about 45 percent.
In short
Anthropic told investors it booked $16.8 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2026, up roughly 45 percent from the prior quarter — a sharp slowdown from the 140-percent-plus jump before it.
At a glance
- Q3 2026 revenue was $16.8 billion, after about $11.5 billion in Q2 and $4.8 billion in Q1.
- Anthropic reports $1.70 of revenue per dollar of compute and an 11 percent adjusted operating margin excluding stock comp.
- Distillation by rival labs accounted for 5 to 7 percent of revenue and dropped sharply in Q3, the company says.
- The IPO is planned for November 2026; the May 2026 private round valued Anthropic at $965 billion.
- Valuation targets conflict: reports cite up to $2 trillion, others expect under $1.5 trillion.
Anthropic put its third-quarter 2026 revenue at $16.8 billion in front of investors, roughly 45 percent above the second quarter. The company hosted the investor day on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, weeks before a listing it plans for November.
The growth rate is the part worth sitting with. One quarter earlier, revenue had climbed more than 140 percent, largely on the back of the Claude Code developer tool. This quarter it grew at roughly a third of that pace.
A real quarterly series, not a run rate
For the first time Anthropic laid out actual quarterly numbers instead of leaning on annualized run-rate figures, the metric private AI labs have generally preferred. Q1 came in at $4.8 billion and Q2 at about $11.5 billion.
The Q2 figure is where the reports diverge. SiliconANGLE lists $11.6 billion; Simon Willison''s notes list $11.5 billion. That $100 million gap is the entire difference between a headline reading "nearly 50 percent" and one reading "45 percent sequentially" — 11.5 to 16.8 is about 46 percent, 11.6 to 16.8 is just under 45. Which number the deck actually showed cannot be checked from outside.
Profitable, with an asterisk
Anthropic reported an 11 percent adjusted operating margin for the year through Q3, excluding stock-based compensation, plus positive cash flow. In Q3 every dollar spent on compute returned $1.70 in revenue.
The sources do not agree on how new that is. SiliconANGLE describes Q3 as the first quarter of adjusted profitability; the-decoder calls it the second consecutive one. Nothing in the public reporting settles it.
Revenue the company would rather lose
Between 5 and 7 percent of revenue came from rival labs distilling Anthropic''s models — paying for outputs to train their own systems — and Anthropic says it cut that activity substantially during Q3. Willison extrapolates that competitors spent north of $500 million on distillation in Q2. That number is his arithmetic, not a company disclosure.
The valuation question the deck did not close
Reported targets span a wide band: up to $2 trillion per SiliconANGLE, while the-decoder expects a trim to under $1.5 trillion. The May 2026 private round valued the company at $965 billion, and the listing is reported for November, ahead of Thanksgiving.
"It''s a new number, it''s bigger, but it''s still circled by tons of questions" — Holger Mueller, Constellation Research, on how profitability is defined and how much Anthropic discloses before going public.
Competitive pressure is visible in the product calendar too: OpenAI shipped Astra in September, and Anthropic answered with Opus 5.5 late that month.
