Anthropic has merged Claude Cowork into the main Claude chat. The company's September 16, 2026 announcement frames it as “merging into one Claude”: a fast question and a report you hand over before lunch are supposed to start in the same box, with the longer job continuing after you close the laptop.
One box, one router
The first thing users lose is a decision. Anthropic says Claude now sends each prompt to whichever surface fits — chat for an immediate answer, Cowork for work that keeps running — so there is no tab to switch. Developer Simon Willison, whose note carried the news further, read the move as Anthropic collapsing products it had kept apart into a single general-purpose agent.
Docs, Slides and Design arrive in beta
Three tools move inside the conversation. Claude Docs handles documents with real-time collaborative editing, Claude Slides builds and presents decks, and Claude Design — until now a standalone tool — is reachable from a chat. SiliconAngle reports exports to Word and Google Docs, plus PowerPoint and PDF downloads. All three arrive as beta.

The billing question
A router that decides when a prompt becomes agent work also decides when it gets expensive. SiliconAngle flags the risk that token-based billing pushes costs up if trivial queries get handed to the heavier agentic path. Is Claude Cowork going away?
No. Cowork becomes part of the Claude chat rather than a separate destination. You type the task into the normal input box and Claude decides whether to answer directly or run it as an agent job.
