Google gives US college students a free year of AI Pro

What is Google offering? US college students get twelve months of Google AI Pro for free — a subscription that normally costs 20 US dollars a month or about 200 dollars a year. It includes 4x higher Gemini usage limits, 5 terabytes of cloud storage, Gemini integration in Gmail and Docs, and access to Google's agent platform Spark, as Google describes in its announcement post.

What is the Student Hub? A new learning area in the Gemini app: a study notebook, flashcards, practice quizzes, 3D simulations and custom-generated practice tests — up to full-length SAT prep exams. Google is clearly positioning Gemini as a study tool, not just a chatbot.

Does it apply internationally? Yes, in tiers: students outside the US receive a year of Google AI Plus (normally $5/month) with higher limits and 400 GB of storage. Earlier reports mentioned a rollout to more than 140 markets; the premium AI Pro tier remains US-only for now.

What's the catch? The Next Web points out that the subscription "auto-renews at the full price after a year". Those who don't want to pay must cancel in time — a classic conversion mechanism.

What is the strategy? The battle for the next generation of users is in full swing: OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic court students with similar free offers. Whoever shapes the university years wins long-term paying customers — and training data for education workflows. Universities, meanwhile, face growing pressure to tighten AI policies for exams.
