Lawsuit against xAI: Grok allegedly enabled abuse imagery

Pressure on xAI is mounting: a woman identified in court filings as “Jane Doe 4” has joined a lawsuit brought by three Tennessee teenagers against the AI company, now part of SpaceX. Her allegation: her stepfather used Grok's image generator to create more than 7,000 manipulated, explicit images from a childhood photo taken when she was eleven years old.

According to the plaintiff, the images were discovered during a law-enforcement raid. The teenagers' original suit accuses xAI of failing to take basic precautions to prevent Grok from being used to create explicit images of real people, including minors. The plaintiffs are seeking class-action certification.

The case does not stand alone: the New York Times reported earlier in 2026 that the platform X had at times been flooded with millions of sexualized Grok-generated images. Grok's image features, including its so-called “spicy” mode, have faced criticism over weak safeguards since launch.

xAI has not publicly commented on the new allegations. The corporate structure adds weight to the case: since SpaceX absorbed xAI — and this week also closed its acquisition of coding company Cursor — legal and public scrutiny lands directly on Elon Musk's combined space and AI group.

For the industry, the case is shaping up as a precedent test: it may help decide how far AI providers are liable for foreseeable misuse of their generators — a question European regulators are also weighing under the AI Act and the Digital Services Act.
