Meta AI arrives as a dedicated Mac app — with screen context and system-wide dictation

Meta has released Meta AI as a standalone desktop app for the Mac — version 1.0, in beta. It runs natively on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later and, according to 9to5Mac, is built as an AppKit and SwiftUI shell using WebKit for richer chat content.

Two features lift the app beyond a chat window. First, on request it can watch a shared window or screen and answer in context — Meta uses its Muse Spark model for that screen understanding. Second, there is system-wide dictation: hold a shortcut, speak, and the text lands in whichever application is active, from Mail to documents to a code editor.

The audience is clearly drawn. The app targets businesses and content creators: users can connect Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns and Google Workspace — Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides — and query the assistant for insights across them.

That puts Meta at the same frontier OpenAI and Anthropic are working on: away from the chat window, toward an assistant that sees and operates applications. How far that reach extends is then determined less by the model than by the number of connected accounts.

The beta label is not a footnote here. An application that reads screen contents and connects advertising and inbox data is accumulating context in exactly the areas where a wrong move is most expensive.
