Google Gemini Agent Takes On Whole Enterprise Tasks
At its Gemini at Work event, Google Cloud unveiled an agent that takes objectives instead of step-by-step orders and works inside Slack, Microsoft 365 and Git.
In short
Google Cloud introduced the Gemini agent on October 8, 2026: an AI worker that accepts a goal from an employee and then carries out the individual steps itself inside the company's existing tools.

Google Cloud used its Gemini at Work event on October 8, 2026 to introduce the Gemini agent: an AI worker that accepts a goal and then carries out the steps itself inside a company's existing tools. It is meant to run without a dedicated interface, reachable on the web, on mobile, on the desktop and from the command line.
Delegation, not prompting
Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian framed the shift bluntly: "You give it objectives, not instructions. You delegate an outcome and come back to finished work." The practical difference is planning — the agent is described as deciding its own intermediate steps rather than replaying a scripted sequence.
Persistent memory is part of that pitch. A job that starts in a chat channel is supposed to continue in mail or in a repository without being re-explained each time the conversation moves.
The systems it plugs into
The agent operates across Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack, and reaches business systems through connectors. Google names Confluence, Microsoft Teams, Git, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres and Snowflake. The target customer, in other words, is a company whose day does not already run entirely on Google software.
Sub-agents that get their own mailbox
The unusual detail is delegation downward: the agent can create sub-agents with distinct identities and email addresses under @agents.company.com. That turns a piece of software into something colleagues can write to directly. How permissions, audit trails and accountability work for those identities is not spelled out in the announcement.
Model routing and a spending brake
Several models sit behind the product: Gemini Flash for lightweight tasks, a model referred to as "Argon" for harder work, plus Anthropic's Claude models, with more promised later. Smart routing is supposed to pick whichever is cheap enough for the step at hand.
Google puts the drop in per-token prices at roughly 98 percent since 2024, and administrators can set enforced spending caps in the Cloud Billing Console. That control is itself a signal: an agent working unattended spends differently from a person typing into a chat box.
What is not yet pinned down
The reporting available to us gives no launch date, licensing tier or price for the Gemini agent. A separate report by The Verge places the agent inside the Gemini Enterprise app; we were unable to open that article, so we treat the placement as unconfirmed here. There is likewise no firm information on how the agent behaves in regulated or audited environments.
